Vintage Design
This lovey little table was produced from elm wood in Shanxi province towards the end of the nineteenth century. Originall made for use on the ‘kang’ – an earth, brick or stone platform that was used for reclining on during the day and which would be heated from underneath in the colder months. Food was often served on low level tables like this one and the upturned ends at the top of this table suggest that it might have also been used as an altar surface for ancestor offerings. The old black lacquer finish has worn over the centuries, mainly around the feet and top surface adding warmth and character. The front spandrels and apron are delicately carved adding an atttractive element. Three small drawers provide great storage for remote controls if using as a stand for a small TV or perfect for knick-knacks,as a small coffee table, placed at the end of a sofa or next to favourite amchair.
